La Souterraine doit son nom à la crype sous-terraine de son église. L'occupation humaine est attestée à partir du IXe siècle.
La ville se situe entre l'autoroute A20 (Paris-Toulouse) et la Nationale 145 (Limoges-Montluçon), ce qui en fait un carrefour commercial pour une
large zone.
La Souterraine owes its name to the underground crypt of its church. Human occupation is attested from the 9th century.
The city is located between the A20 motorway (Paris-Toulouse) and the National Road 145 (Limoges-Montluçon), which makes it a commercial crossroads for a large area.
La Souterraine et alentours
La ville de La Souterraine est remarquable derrière ses anciennes fortifications et ses larges portes. On y trouve des boulangeries traditionnelles,
des restaurants, des boutiques de produits loacaux. La visite de la crypte et son église est incontournable.
Aux alentours, la Tour Bridiers, toujours sources de fouilles archéologiques, se visite librement et accueille la fresque historique annuelle au mois d'août.
L'étand du Cheix est aménagé en belle promenade avec aires de piques-niques et des activités en période estivales.
Un peu plus loin l'étang de la Cazine et son mont
sont l'occasion d'une petite randonnée entre la bruyère et les berges de la Cazine.
Les deux incontournables du secteur sont la forteresse de Crozant et la cité de Bénévent-l'Abbaye.

The town of La Souterraine is remarkable behind its ancient fortifications and wide gates. There are traditional bakeries,
restaurants, shops selling local products. A visit to the crypt and its church is a must.
In the surroundings, the Bridiers Tower, still a source of archaeological excavations, can be visited freely and hosts the annual historical fresco in August.
The Cheix pond is developed into a beautiful walk with picnic areas and activities in the summer season.
A little further on, the Cazine pond and its
mount are an opportunity for a short hike between the heather and the banks of the Cazine.
The two must-sees in the area are the fortress of Crozant and the town of Bénévent-l'Abbaye.
